Wekfest New Jersey, held in Edison, New Jersey, has solidified its position as a premier destination for JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) enthusiasts in the United States. This annual gathering serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Japanese engineering, precision, and tuning culture. As a long-time observer of the automotive landscape, I have witnessed Wekfest’s remarkable growth since its inception in 2008 by Kenneth Li. The event has evolved into a cornerstone of the JDM tuning community, consistently showcasing some of the most exceptional vehicles from across the country.
The Wekfest USA 2026 tour brought a palpable shift in the show’s focus, with Hondas dominating the landscape. Across the exhibition floor, for every Toyota, Nissan, or Porsche, there appeared to be several Hondas, each a testament to the depth and diversity of the Honda tuning scene. As a lifelong Honda enthusiast, I found myself in familiar territory, surrounded by vehicles that embody the essence of Japanese automotive passion.
This year’s Wekfest USA 2026 featured a diverse range of Hondas and Acuras, ranging from iconic mid-engine sports cars to modified kei cars, each representing a unique facet of the Honda tuning culture. Below is a detailed look at some of the standout builds that captured the attention of attendees and myself at the New Jersey stop of the Wekfest tour.
The Apex of Japanese Engineering: The 1992 Acura NSX
Marby Enriquez’s 1992 Acura NSX represents a paradigm of evolution in the mid-engine sports car segment. Since acquiring the car in 2014, Enriquez has transformed it into a purpose-built time attack machine, pushing the boundaries of performance and presence.
Engine & Performance Enhancements
The original NSX engine was replaced with a highly modified K24 inline-four engine. This engine has been equipped with a custom high-compression K24A2 build, featuring Arias pistons, Manley rods, and HKS valves. The engine utilizes a Hondata KPro system for tuning and is topped with a custom intake manifold designed to maximize airflow.
The car also features a titanium exhaust system that contributes to its signature sound and weight savings. The engine bay showcases a clean, tidy layout, with all components precisely placed for optimal performance.
Exterior & Aerodynamic Modifications
The NSX sports a striking blue wrap that immediately draws attention. It features a Comptech Whipple supercharger, a Walbro 255 fuel pump, and a snorkel intake inspired by the Japan-exclusive NSX-R GT. A carbon-fiber hood with a functional scoop channels cool air directly into the engine bay.
Other exterior enhancements include a Voltex Type 4/5 GT wing for high-speed stability and Volk Racing TE37 wheels paired with Toyo Proxes R888R tires. StopTech brakes with Hawk pads ensure stopping power that matches the car’s performance capabilities.
Chassis & Suspension Upgrades
To handle the increased power and performance, the NSX features KW Clubsport coil-overs, titanium chassis bracing, and a strategically placed rear wing that generates downforce at high speeds. The suspension setup allows the car to remain composed and stable on the track, providing a precise and responsive driving experience.
Legacy of the NSX
The NSX has remained a sought-after platform for enthusiasts for decades, known for its exceptional handling, reliability, and driver feedback. Enriquez’s build stands out not only for its performance capabilities but also for the precision and craftsmanship that went into its construction.
A Global Favorite: The Honda N-BOX
The Honda N-BOX represents one of the many kei cars the brand has produced over the years. These small, efficient vehicles are designed to meet strict Japanese-mandated size and engine regulations, with displacement capped at approximately 660cc. Even the largest kei cars remain smaller than a Mazda Miata.
Design & Aesthetic Appeal
This particular N-BOX embraces its minivan-inspired form, offering a distinctive blend of practicality and character. Finished in the sportier Custom trim, it features an assertive front fascia and a boxy silhouette reminiscent of Honda’s earlier Element.
A standout detail is its license plate reading “K24 NA.” While the owner’s intent remains somewhat ambiguous, the sheer presence of the vehicle highlighted the diversity of the Honda tuning culture. The car stood out as a uniquely Japanese creation showcased on American soil.
The Engineering Behind the N-BOX
Although the N-BOX is primarily designed as a practical family vehicle, Honda’s engineering prowess shines through in its efficient packaging and innovative interior design. The vehicle is equipped with Honda Sensing, a suite of advanced driver-assistance systems that enhance safety and convenience.
Wekfest USA 2026 Showcasing Honda Diversity
Vehicles like the N-BOX highlight the creativity and diversity that define Wekfest. Alongside the kei car were other unexpected builds, including a lowered Element with a blue interior and an oversized rear speaker, as well as a pair of modified Acura MDXs, rare sights that underscored the broad range of modified models on display.
Precision Engineering: The Acura MDX Type S
The Acura MDX Type S is a testament to Honda’s luxury and performance vehicles. This vehicle is equipped with a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine that produces 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque.
Performance & Dynamics
The MDX Type S features a Type S-specific chassis with adaptive dampers, providing a comfortable ride for daily driving while delivering dynamic handling for spirited driving. The vehicle also includes an SH-AWD system that optimizes traction and stability in various driving conditions.
Aesthetic Execution
The MDX Type S on display was modified with a black wrap and black wheels, giving it an aggressive and stealthy look. The vehicle highlights the luxury and performance capabilities of Acura’s S-Line, appealing to enthusiasts who appreciate both style and performance in their vehicles.
The Precision Build: The Honda S2000
This S2000 exemplifies precision and purpose, showcasing a build executed with remarkable attention to detail. The vehicle features a highly tuned F22C1 engine enhanced with a selection of components from Mugen, ASM, and HKS, crowned by a distinctive Jun valve cover.
Engine & Performance Modifications
The engine bay is a testament to meticulous craftsmanship, with all components organized and fitted to perfection. The F22C1 engine has been enhanced with a variety of performance upgrades, including custom camshafts, ported cylinder head, and a high-flow intake manifold.
The vehicle features a custom exhaust system that provides an aggressive engine note and improves exhaust flow. The Mugen intake manifold is a standout feature, showcasing the commitment to high-performance engineering.
Exterior & Aero Upgrades
The S2000 rides on Advan wheels and features Renegade brakes, a Voltex rear wing, and an ASM steering wheel. These modifications balance performance and aesthetics, creating a visually striking and functional vehicle.
The Significance of Precision
Among the many S2000s on display at Wekfest USA 2026, this example stood out as the most complete and cohesive build, a machine that would feel equally at home on a Tokyo Auto Salon display stand as it would be carving up a circuit.
Supporting The Culture: A Diverse Automotive Showcase
Other visual highlights included scale model cars displayed in front of their full-size counterparts and a liveried-up Motocompacto electric scooter parked beside a sixth-generation Civic. The Civic featured an original 1960s Honda emblem on its rear, the same wide-top “H” design that inspired the brand’s new 0 Series EV logo.
Supporting Brands and Exhibits
The Wekfest floor featured several supporting brands and exhibits that showcased the depth of the JDM tuning community. These exhibitors displayed a wide range of products, ranging from tuning parts to lifestyle merchandise, highlighting the community’s passion for Japanese automotive culture.
The Civic Hatchback: A Sleeper Build
Among all the wild builds and glowing LEDs, one humble silver Civic stood out, not for its looks but for what was under the hood: the only H-series engine we saw at the show.
Engine Swap
The H-series, often overshadowed by the legendary B-series, was Honda’s torquey workhorse that powered cars like the Prelude Type S and Accord Euro R. Seeing one swapped into a modest EG generation Civic hatchback was rare and refreshing.
The Legacy of EG Civics
The EG generation Civic is a highly sought-after platform for enthusiasts, known for its lightweight chassis and tuner-friendly platform. The owner of this Civic has kept this car for over two decades, and the H22 motor has resided in it for almost the exact same amount of time. This build was not trying to be flashy but emphasized pure function and performance.
The Unicorn: The Mugen RR
And finally, the crown jewel Honda of the show. Positioned near the far end of the Wekfest floor was a pristine FD2 Civic Type R in Championship White, but alongside it sat something even rarer: the Mugen RR.
A Rarity in the United States
Regarded as the ultimate Type R, all 300 Mugen RR units sold out within roughly 10 minutes, with 299 remaining in Japan and a single car exported to Malaysia. This example was later imported to the U.S. and features Mugen camshafts
