Title: The Return of the V8: Unpacking the All-New 2027 Mercedes-AMG CLE63
Content:
For years, automotive enthusiasts have been whispering rumors and speculating about the potential successor to the legendary Mercedes-AMG CLE63. With the 2026 model year marking a significant transition in the luxury coupe segment, the question on everyone’s mind has been whether the iconic V8 roar would grace the new CLE platform. According to insider sources, this dream is about to become a reality.
The North American Imperative
It is no secret that the U.S. market represents a significant portion of the sales volume for the high-performance AMG lineup. For high-end vehicles equipped with powerful V8 engines, North America’s dominance becomes even more pronounced. As Adam Chamberlain, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, recently noted in a press briefing, a staggering 95 percent of CLE63 sales are projected to come from this region. This overwhelming demand has prompted Mercedes-Benz to make a strategic decision: the new CLE63 will be engineered specifically as an American-spec model, designed to meet and exceed the expectations of U.S. consumers.
While the official timeline for the release of the new CLE63 coupe and convertible has yet to be confirmed, early prototypes have reportedly been driven by executives, who have praised its performance. While it may not debut this year, Chamberlain assures customers that the car is being developed to be “unbelievable,” suggesting that the wait will be well worth it.
A New Family of V8 Engines
The driving force behind the resurgence of the V8 in the CLE63 is the development of a new generation of V8 engines that marry high performance with lower emissions to meet future regulatory requirements. This new engine family, which includes a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft, has already debuted in the 2027 S-Class and will power the upcoming 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE580 and GLS580 SUVs.
In these production vehicles, the engine produces 530 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. It is not surprising that AMG is developing performance variants of this new V8 engine, which are expected to deliver even higher output and torque figures.
Is the V8 Returning to the E-Class and C-Class?
While the return of the V8 to the CLE63 is a significant development, the question remains whether this renewed focus on V8 technology will extend to other performance models. Chamberlain has stated that the return of V8 engines to the E-Class and C-Class is currently unconfirmed. However, he acknowledges that he, like many enthusiasts, would love to see an E63 wagon return to the market.
Currently, buyers seeking a powerful E-Class wagon have the E53, which utilizes a plug-in hybrid system with a 3.0-liter inline-six engine producing 577 horsepower. Similarly, the most powerful CLE currently available is the Mercedes-AMG CLE53 (pictured at top and bottom), which is powered by a 443-horsepower version of the inline-six engine, though without the plug-in hybrid system of the E53. It is presumed that the new CLE63 will feature an AMG-tuned version of the new twin-turbo V8, likely producing significantly more power.
Renewed North American Focus
The CLE63’s development reflects Mercedes-Benz’s renewed strategic focus on the North American market. As Chamberlain notes, the U.S. remains a region where V8-powered cars continue to be highly desirable. Mercedes is reportedly developing two or three additional products specifically for North America, built on a new platform that is also expected to support V8 engines.
These developments are part of a broader global product offensive by Mercedes-Benz. Within the next three years, the company plans to launch 40 new vehicles across its Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG, and Maybach brands, offering a diverse range of powertrains including internal combustion engines, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric vehicles.
Committed to V8s for the U.S. Market
The investment in V8 technology represents a strong commitment to this engine configuration, as emphasized by Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Group. More broadly, it signifies a dedication to meeting the needs of U.S. customers, where the V8 has been a cornerstone of high-end and high-performance Mercedes vehicles for decades.
The new V8 is debuting in the S-Class, offering a refined yet potent performance experience—a “wolf in sheep’s clothing.” As Källenius explained, “That is the wolf in sheep’s clothing. But then the wolf really comes out with the AMG version, so there will be a wolf and an Alpha wolf coming. V8 fans in the U.S. are absolutely going to love that.” Based on early prototypes, it is clear that V8 enthusiasts in the United States have much to look forward to in the upcoming CLE63.
