After my foundational experience with Wekfest USA two years prior, I recently had the privilege of returning to witness the latest iteration of this prestigious gathering. Established by Kenneth Li in 2008, Wekfest has consistently cemented its reputation as a global benchmark for elite automotive customization, particularly within the sphere of Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) vehicles. It serves as a vibrant confluence point for the tuning community, consistently showcasing what many consider the zenith of build quality, engineering precision, and creative expression.
This year’s installment in Edison, New Jersey, presented a discernible and fascinating pivot in the event’s composition. The overwhelming demographic of the showcase was undeniably Honda and Acura. For every Nissan, Toyota, or European performance marque present, there were seemingly multiple Honda vehicles. What captivated me most was the sheer breadth and variety on display—each vehicle not just present, but representing the absolute upper echelon of the Honda enthusiast and tuning movement. This is not merely a car show; it is a museum of personalized engineering, where passion meets obsessive detail.
The Lone Icon: Honda NSX as a Purpose-Built Time Attack Machine
This particular 1992 Acura NSX, owned by Marby Enriquez since 2014, exemplifies the dynamic evolution of Honda’s seminal mid-engine supercar. Enriquez’s journey with this machine began in its factory configuration, but it soon evolved into a sophisticated, purpose-built time attack weapon. The vehicle sports a visually arresting electric blue wrap that commands attention, paired with a classic Comptech Whipple supercharger setup. To support this boost, the engine is fed by a Walbro 255 fuel pump and features a snorkel intake design heavily inspired by the Japan-exclusive NSX-R GT.
The aesthetic is dominated by a purposeful carbon-fiber hood and a functional scoop that directs a cascade of cool air to the hungry engine bay. This engineering decision is not merely for show; it is a critical performance upgrade that ensures thermal stability during high-stress track conditions.

The engine produces recorded figures of 380 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque at the wheels. This raw power is managed by KW Clubsport coil-overs, giving the car its commanding stance and track-ready handling. The vehicle rides on Volk Racing TE37 wheels, renowned for their lightweight design and proven performance credentials. Wrapped in aggressive Toyo Proxes R888R tires, the NSX is ready to grip the asphalt. Stopping power is provided by StopTech brakes paired with Hawk pads, offering consistent thermal resistance and modulation. High-speed stability is assured by a Voltex Type 4/5 GT wing, providing essential downforce during hard braking and cornering.

While the car has undergone further refinements since its initial feature in 2020—now sporting white wheels and a subtler front spoiler—Enriquez’s NSX remains a striking testament to the precision and craftsmanship that are the hallmarks of these legendary vehicles. It exemplifies how the Honda NSX has transformed from a luxury sports car into a dominant force on the track.

The Unexpected Star: N-BOX and JDM Kei Car Culture
The Honda N-BOX represents one of the many brilliant examples of Honda’s kei car innovations. These vehicles are meticulously engineered to adhere to strict Japanese-mandated regulations on size and engine displacement, which typically caps out around 660cc. Even the largest kei cars remain smaller than a Mazda Miata, showcasing Honda’s mastery of packaging and efficiency.
This particular N-BOX fully embraces its minivan-inspired silhouette, offering a unique combination of functionality and character. Dressed in the sportier Custom trim, it boasts an aggressive front fascia and a boxy design that subtly echoes Honda’s earlier Element. A noteworthy detail is the license plate reading “K24 NA.” Whether the owner has successfully swapped a K24 inline-four engine—nearly four times the size of the stock powertrain—under the hood remains a subject of playful speculation. Regardless of the powertrain reality, the vehicle stands as a unique Japanese creation displayed proudly on American soil.

Vehicles like this N-BOX highlight the creativity and diversity that define Wekfest. Alongside this quirky machine were other unexpected showcases, including a lowered Honda Element with a striking blue interior and an oversized rear speaker, as well as a pair of modified Acura MDXs. These rare sights underscore the broad spectrum of modified models on display, demonstrating that the Honda customization scene extends far beyond the conventional sports coupes.

Auto Salon Contender: Precision-Engineered Honda S2000
This Honda S2000 exemplifies precision engineering and purpose-driven modification. Under the hood, its F22 engine has been enhanced with a curated selection of high-performance components from Mugen, ASM, and HKS, crowned by a distinctive Jun valve cover.

The meticulous attention to detail extends well beyond the engine bay. The car rides on Advan wheels and features Renegade brakes, a Voltex rear wing, and an ASM steering wheel, each component chosen to harmonize performance with aesthetics. Among the many S2000s present at Wekfest 2025, this example stood out as the most complete and cohesive build, a machine that could easily transition from the Wekfest floor to a Tokyo Auto Salon display stand or a competitive circuit without missing a beat.

Visual highlights were not limited to performance vehicles. Attendees were treated to scale models of cars displayed adjacent to their full-size counterparts. A liveried Motocompacto electric scooter was positioned next to a sixth-generation Civic. This EG Civic featured an original 1960s Honda emblem on its rear, the same wide-top “H” design that inspired the brand’s new 0 Series EV logo.

Civic Hatchback with a Prelude Heart
Amidst the vibrant LEDs and extravagant builds, one humble silver Civic distinguished itself, not by its visual flair, but by its mechanical heart: the only H-series engine we encountered at the show. The H-series, often overshadowed by the legendary B-series, was Honda’s torquey workhorse that powered icons such as the Prelude Type S and Accord Euro R. Discovering one swapped into a modest EG generation Civic hatchback was a rare and refreshing sight.

The owner of this Civic has maintained ownership of this EG chassis for over two decades, and the H22 motor has resided in it for almost the exact same duration. This build wasn’t intended to be visually ostentatious; it was purely about functionality and proven reliability.

The Ultimate Unicorn: Mugen RR and FD2 Civic Type R
As the show progressed toward its conclusion, the true crown jewel of the Honda display emerged. Positioned near the back of the Wekfest floor was a pristine FD2 Civic Type R in Championship White, but sharing the spotlight was something even rarer: the Mugen RR.
Regarded as the ultimate Type R iteration, all 300 Mugen RR units sold out in approximately ten minutes upon their release. A mere 299 units remained in Japan, with the single remaining car being exported to Malaysia. This extraordinary example has since been imported to the United States and features Mugen camshafts, ECU tuning, and an upgraded exhaust system, pushing the output to 237 hp. Carbon-fiber bumpers, an aluminum hood, and the signature 18-inch Mugen wheels all contribute to reducing weight and sharpening the vehicle’s performance across the board.

The Mugen RR represents the pinnacle of Honda’s engineering philosophy. Positioned next to the FD2, the distinction becomes clear. While the FD2 captivates with its aesthetics, the Mugen RR embodies the pure essence of Mugen’s performance philosophy, offering a pure, uncompromising driving experience. This makes the Mugen RR the ultimate benchmark for Type R enthusiasts.

It would be impossible to encapsulate every exceptional Honda from Wekfest in a single narrative. The event showcased a diverse range of enthusiasts, from those who prioritize street style to those who build dedicated track machines. The organizers have successfully cultivated an atmosphere that celebrates the breadth of the Honda customization scene, making Wekfest an essential stop for anyone serious about the culture.
