Parte 2 : N1608020_Part 1 Russian Drone Spotted Over Baltic —Then NATO's Response Was INSTANT#news #breakingnews #war_part2 The 2005 Lotus Elise Was a 1,975-Pound Wake-Up Call It’s tiny, raw, and smoother than any Lotus before it. By Kevin Smith MotorTrend Archives Photographer: Apr 06, 2026 [This story originally appeared in the July 2004 issue of MotorTrend.] With considerable relief, we can confirm that the 2005 Lotus Elise should not demand any apologies or necessitate any special considerations as it rolls onto the U.S. market. However, this was not a foregone conclusion prior to our initial drive of the new U.S.-specification Elise at the exquisite Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama. With this $40,000 vehicle, Lotus is essentially relaunching its brand in America—the marque had become nearly invisible due to years of disappointing sales of the dated Esprit—so a great deal hinges on its success. But considering the checkered history of Lotus cars over the decades, we were uncertain of what to anticipate. Lotus Starts Over in America Founded by Colin Chapman in the early 1950s, the Hethel, England-based company has long been renowned for its innovative approach to building simple, lightweight, delicate-handling sports and race cars. However, quality, durability, and reliability have never been defining hallmarks of Lotus. The driving thrills often required a certain kit-car attitude toward fit and finish and owner maintenance, but none of that would be acceptable in a new-millennium production automobile. Today’s consumers expect a trouble-free driving experience, and no one would be prepared to make allowances for Lotus. We don’t believe they’ll have to.
One glance at the specification sheet suggests that the new Elise will uphold company traditions of driveability and performance. It is a simple, mid-engine roadster weighing 1,975 pounds, featuring a 190-horsepower Toyota engine and a six-speed gearbox, along with chassis tuning by the same ride-and-handling experts whose talents the company licenses worldwide through its Lotus Engineering consultancy. The car—by far Lotus’s best-seller to date—has been a delightful driver in European specification for several years, utilizing a coarse and uninspiring Rover engine, so the Toyota-powered U.S. version could hardly fail to be enjoyable to drive. Under a Ton, Overdelivering But would Lotus tradition also persist in the car’s perceived quality and propensity for shedding components? That was our primary concern. The final verdict will depend on its performance in the marketplace, but early indications are promising. The Elise is small (burly occupants will rub elbows, and everyone must travel light) and simply trimmed (a great deal of bare structural aluminum is visible). But these are necessary and acceptable compromises to create a car that is lightweight and supremely agile. The quality of materials, the accuracy of assembly, and the likely reliability appear to be fully preserved. Fit and finish are very much up to par; there are no sloppy noises or sensations; and the car looks and feels securely put together in the way we now expect of modern vehicles produced by modern manufacturers. The Elise is built on a sophisticated platform chassis of bonded aluminum sheets and extrusions. Lotus reports that this structure weighs a mere 150 pounds, but it imparts a sense of rigidity (which is difficult to achieve in a convertible) and provides the stiffness necessary to allow a precisely tuned suspension to function exactly as its engineers intended. This rigid foundation supports a control-arm suspension featuring gas-charged Bilstein dampers, disc brakes with enthusiast-calibrated ABS, and lightweight, modestly sized alloy wheels fitted with custom-specification Yokohama tires. Toyota Power, Lotus Personality Nestled behind the cockpit, the powertrain comprises Toyota’s 1.8-liter 2ZZ-GE engine and six-speed transmission, as employed in the Celica GT-S and Matrix XRS. This relatively long-stroke engine utilizes variable valve timing and lift to provide flexible midrange torque and a exhilarating top-end rush, but it feels considerably different—and much better—in the Lotus application than it does in any Toyota vehicle we have tested. You don’t have to drive it as though you’re angry with it, and it doesn’t buzz and shriek back at you. In Toyotas, we usually feel the need to rev this engine hard and simply put up with its intensity. The VVTL-i system has always provided a dramatic transition to the high-speed cam profile at approximately 6,400 rpm. It achieves its objective, but doesn’t feel as smooth and enjoyable as it could. Lotus has transformed the 1.8-liter into a much smoother, more elastic powerplant, and not just by mounting it in a considerably lighter and less demanding chassis. A new engine-control computer programmed by Lotus fundamentally alters the engine’s character. Notably, the transition from low-speed to high-speed valve events occurs a couple of hundred rpm earlier and feels much more seamless. It doesn’t suffer from a drop-off in torque during upshifts, which enhances the engine’s ability to provide responsive torque and willing performance whenever the driver demands it. And that gets to the real purpose of the Elise. The Lotus development team stated they were aiming for a Formula Ford car for the road—in the way it responds to your input, reacts and communicates, forgives mistakes but doesn’t hide them, helps you learn to drive better, and ensures you enjoy the learning process along the way. And they succeeded perfectly.
Handling That Resets Your Expectations Step into the pleasingly stark interior (which you can do in an open-wheeler style if you’re feeling adventurous—step over the door, stand on the seat, then wriggle down under the wheel), and you’ll find yourself in a businesslike driving environment. You sit very low to the ground, with very little car surrounding you, although you are well-protected by the large windscreen and the rear roof hoop (with fixed glass). Visibility is good in all directions except to the rear quarters, and the upright, one-piece bucket seat, which magically accommodates a wide range of body types, positions you facing the rather small steering wheel in a way that immediately promises good things to come. The engine fires with an eager but not overly raspy note, and as you orient yourself to the pedals and shift into first gear, you notice two key points: Firstly, the pedal spacing isn’t overly cramped, but you’ll still fare better with narrow loafers than with wide-soled running shoes; and secondly, the slack-free linkage and light gate return springs Lotus has chosen make this six-speed a more user-friendly gearbox than it has ever been before. It doesn’t take much beyond a brisk walking pace to appreciate how the Elise harnesses the magic of light weight. The delicate immediacy of fast-ratio, pure-manual steering, with little mass bearing down on small tire contact patches, is a delight to feel and to use. And a car weighing under a ton doesn’t require a lot of technical gizmos to help it change direction on a whim. Finally, 190 horsepower and 138 pound-feet may not sound like the ingredients for speed-lust, but with only 1,975 pounds of car to move, that output can truly motivate. Lotus quotes a 0-to-60 mph time of 4.9 seconds, though that only hints at the true beauty of the Elise’s power-to-weight ratio. The throttle is capable of more than just accelerating and decelerating. It can also be used to influence cornering attitude, giving the driver lively options to manage both ends of the car. Exquisite. An autocross course provides a safe and focused opportunity to evaluate the Elise’s handling characteristics, and Lotus set one up in a Barber parking area. The most telling sections were the long, smooth arcs at each end, where we could experiment with cornering attitude, and where the Elise proved remarkably cooperative. On neutral throttle, it turns in dead neutral, with slip angles and grip perfectly balanced between front and rear tires. Entering some throttle introduces gentle understeer, pointing you slightly wide as the front tires unweight. Getting off the power elicits some lift-throttle oversteer, gently tucking the tail around and tightening your turning radius. Applying power again with authority allows you to hold a lurid tail-out slide as if you were a naturally gifted drifter. The Elise makes it effortless. Out on the open road, where you’ll encounter trees instead of orange cones, you might not slide quite so casually. But the Elise remains the same eager dance partner. It’s flexible and hassle-free in traffic (though you do feel small), and whenever the mood and opportunity arise, the car is ready to perform. Freeway onramps become mood-altering experiences, simply due to how the car darts into a cornering stance and accelerates hard, grinning back at you all the while. On winding back roads, the Elise will flow as gracefully as you desire or attack apexes like a shifter kart. You are in complete control. The Cost of Simplicity and the Touring Pack Decision This type of balanced, immediate, driver-centric behavior comes at only one price: the new Lotus (like most of its predecessors, come to think of it) represents elemental transportation in the extreme. Need to transport a large family? Insist on being pampered in luxury far removed from the outside world? Need to bring two golf bags? Forget it. You have a car that is 149 inches long and nearly 44 inches tall, so you are expected to make some sacrifices in utility.
And that’s perfectly acceptable if you are in the
