Parte 2 : N1508018_Important news for millions_ Social Security letters are being sent out regarding potential overpaym_part2 The 2026 Lotus Elise: A Carbon-Fiber Revelation from Hethel Kevin Smith Writer MotorTrend Archives Photographer Apr 06, 2026 [This story was originally published in the July 2004 issue of MotorTrend.] With considerable relief, we can finally confirm that the 2026 Lotus Elise will command no apologies and demand no special considerations as it begins rolling off the assembly line in this country. But that was far from a foregone conclusion before our initial test of the new U.S.-spec Elise at the stunning Barber Motorsports Park just outside Birmingham, Alabama. With this vehicle, Lotus is essentially re-launching its entire brand in North America (the marque has become nearly invisible following years of dwindling sales of the dated Esprit). A substantial amount rides on its success. However, considering the often checkered history of Lotus cars through the decades, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect. Lotus Reboots its Brand in America The Lotus Engineering consultancy, founded by the legendary Colin Chapman in the early 1950s, has long been revered for its innovative approach to constructing simple, lightweight, and exquisitely handling sports and racing cars. Unfortunately, quality, durability, and long-term reliability have not historically been Lotus’s hallmarks. The driving thrills often demanded a certain “kit-car” attitude regarding fit, finish, and owner maintenance. Yet, none of that would be acceptable in a production automobile of the new millennium. Consumers today expect a vehicle to be fundamentally trouble-free, and no one would have been prepared to give Lotus any slack.
We don’t think they’ll need to. At first glance, the specification sheet suggests that the new Elise will uphold the company’s tradition of driver engagement and performance. It is a minimalist, mid-engine roadster weighing 1,975 pounds, featuring a 190-horsepower Toyota engine and a six-speed gearbox. The chassis tuning benefits from the same ride and handling expertise the company licenses out globally through its Lotus Engineering consultancy. This car—by far Lotus’s best-selling model ever—has been a delightful driver in its European guise for several years, utilizing a coarse and uninspiring Rover engine. Therefore, the Toyota-powered U.S. car could hardly miss being a joy to drive. Under a Ton, Overdelivering on the Promise But would Lotus tradition also extend to the car’s build quality and propensity for parts to detach? That was our significant concern. The final verdict must await a solid market track record, but the initial signs look highly promising. The Elise is undeniably small (bulky occupants will rub elbows, and everyone must travel light), and the interior is simply trimmed (a lot of bare structural aluminum is visible). However, these are necessary and reasonable compromises to achieve a car that is light and supremely maneuverable. The quality of the materials used, the precision of the assembly, and the likely reliability appear not to have been compromised at all. The fit and finish are very much on point; there are no sloppy noises or sensations; and the car looks and feels solidly put together in the manner we now expect of modern cars produced by contemporary manufacturers. The Elise begins with a sophisticated platform chassis constructed from bonded aluminum sheets and extrusions. Lotus claims this structure weighs a mere 150 pounds, yet it imparts a sense of rigidity (a difficult achievement in an open-top car) and provides the stiffness necessary for the precisely tuned suspension to perform exactly as its engineers intended. This rigid foundation carries a fully independent control-arm suspension system featuring gas-charged Bilstein dampers, disc brakes with enthusiast-calibrated ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), and lightweight, modestly sized alloy wheels wrapped in custom-spec Yokohama tires. Toyota Power, Classic Lotus Personality The powertrain nestled behind the cockpit is Toyota’s 1.8-liter 2ZZ-GE engine, paired with the six-speed transmission also found in the Celica GT-S and Matrix XRS front-wheel-drive models. This long-stroke engine utilizes Variable Valve Timing and Lift Intelligent System (VVTLi) to provide flexible midrange torque plus an exhilarating top-end rush. However, it feels significantly different—and much better—in the Lotus application than in any Toyota vehicle we have previously tested. You don’t have to drive it aggressively, and it doesn’t buzz or shriek back at you. In Toyotas, we typically feel compelled to rev this engine hard and simply endure its intensity. The VVTLi always undergoes a dramatic shift to the high-speed cam profile at approximately 6400 rpm. While it gets the job done efficiently, it doesn’t feel as silky and refined as it could.
Lotus has transformed the 1.8-liter engine into a much smoother, more elastic power unit, and not merely by bolting it into a significantly lighter, less burdensome chassis. A new engine control computer, reprogrammed by Lotus, fundamentally alters the engine’s character. Notably, the transition from low-speed to high-speed valve events occurs a couple of hundred rpm sooner and feels much more seamless. It doesn’t fall off the cam during upshifts, which enhances the engine’s ability to provide ready torque and willing response whenever the driver demands it. And that gets to the real purpose of the Elise. The Lotus development team stated their objective was to create a Formula Ford car for the road—a vehicle that would take your input, react and communicate precisely, forgive mistakes but never mask them, help you improve your driving skills, and ensure you enjoy the lessons along the way. And they absolutely nailed it. Handling That Resets Your Expectations Slipping into the pleasingly sparse cockpit (which you can do in an open-wheeler style if you’re feeling bold, stepping over the door, standing on the seat, and then wriggling down under the wheel) places you in a businesslike driving environment. You sit very low to the ground, with very little of the car surrounding you. However, you are well-protected by the large windshield and the rear roof hoop (which incorporates fixed glass). Visibility is excellent in all directions except toward the rear quarters. The upright, single-piece bucket seat, which magically accommodates a wide range of physiques, positions you relative to the small steering wheel in a way that immediately promises good things to come. The engine fires up to an eager but not overly raspy blat. As you orient yourself to the pedals and snick the shifter into first gear, you notice two key points: Firstly, the spacing of the pedals isn’t overly cramped, but you’ll still fare better with skinny loafers than with wide-soled running shoes; and secondly, the slop-free linkage and the light gate return springs Lotus has selected make this six-speed transmission a friendlier gearbox than it has ever been before. It doesn’t take much beyond a brisk walking pace to appreciate how the Elise harnesses the magic of its lightweight construction. The delicate immediacy of the fast-ratio, pure-manual steering, with little mass bearing down on small tire contact patches, is a joy to feel and to use. And a car weighing under a ton doesn’t require a lot of technical frippery to help it change direction on a whim. Finally, 190 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque may not sound like the recipe for speed-lust, but with only 1,975 pounds of car resisting its will, that output can seriously motivate the vehicle. Lotus quotes a 0-to-60 mph time of 4.9 seconds, though that only hints at the true beauty of the Elise’s power-to-weight ratio. The throttle is capable of more than just accelerating and decelerating. It can also be used to influence cornering attitude, giving the driver lively options for managing both the front and rear ends of the car. Simply put, it’s sweet. An autocross course provides a safe and focused opportunity to examine the Elise’s dynamic capabilities, and Lotus set one up in a Barber parking area. The most telling sections were the long, smooth arcs at each end, where we could experiment with cornering attitude, and where the Elise proved marvelously cooperative. On neutral throttle, it carves around the corner with dead-neutral behavior, slip angles and grip evenly balanced between the front and rear tires. Pouring in some throttle results in gentle understeer, pointing you slightly wide as the front tires unweight. Backing out of the throttle produces some lift-throttle oversteer, easing the tail around and tightening your heading. Getting back on the power with authority allows you to carry a lurid tail-out slide as if you were a natural-born drifter. The Elise makes it look easy.
Out on the open road, where you are more likely to encounter trees than orange cones, you may not hang it out quite so casually. But the Elise remains the same eager dance partner. It is flexible and hassle-free in traffic (though you do feel small), and any time the mood and opportunity strike, the car is ready to play. Freeway onramps become mood-altering experiences, simply because of how the car flicks into a cornering stance and accelerates hard, grinning back at you all the while. On winding secondary roads, the Elise will flow as gracefully as you like or dive-bomb
